Essential oils have been used throughout history for their health-promoting properties. Today we use essential oils when trying to live a more holistic approach to self-care and as an alternative to the current health systems that are failing us and our families. Many have cleansing properties so they can be used in keeping our houses clean rather than the toxic substances sold on our grocery store shelves.
Essential oils have a unique chemical structure that allows them to deliver targeted benefits through topical application. Certain oils may be used as dietary aids, like curbing sugar cravings and to promote vitality and well-being. They can be used as single essential oils or in complex essential oil blends depending on user experience and desired benefit. Want to learn how to use essential oils? View our reference guide here. You can use doTERRA oils 3 ways:
- Topically – When diluting* the essential oils, use one drop of coconut oil for one or two drops of the essential oil. It is not necessary to dilute the essential oils, but for some essential oils which are particularly cool (Peppermint, Wintergreen) or hot (Oregano, Cinnamon, Clove, Cassia), it may not be comfortable on your skin without diluting and may be particularly uncomfortable for a child. If you use an oil without diluting and it is uncomfortable, don’t add water! That seems to be a natural response since it has a burning feeling. But water and oil don’t mix as we know. Instead, apply a small amount of coconut oil, rub it around the area, and it will quickly resolve the problem. Also, if you are using the oils on an open sore or wound, it is always a good idea to dilute with coconut oil. *For diluting you can also use fractionated coconut oil, olive oil, and almond among others. **An application is usually 2 to 4 drops of an oil.
- Internally – if the bottle has a ‘supplement’ box on the label, you can feel completely safe using it internally. Drip the into an empty veggie gel cap or with lemon oil, I love to put a drop or two in my water.
- Diffusing – Using a diffuser is powerful because we can breathe it in and it kills microorganisms in the air which helps stop the spread of sickness. I love to diffuse the protective blend (OnGuard) during the winter months when we’re indoors and germs are more rampant. I also love to diffuse Lavender oil which is widely used for its calming and relaxing qualities. I also put a drop on my pillow before bed.
